The garden team have been very busy in 2013, we’ve organised many exciting events. Here’s a run down of our eventful year, what’s worked what’s not with a hint of things to come in 2014…
Cameras at Dawn 5.30am on 12 May 2013 and we were delighted to welcome 20 photographers to shoot the sunrise and then tuck into a full English breakfast in the restaurant at 8am. It was great, we loved it, so did you, we’ll be running this one again in 2014.

Rural Crafts and Activities on Fathers’ Day. Our scything and blacksmiths demonstrations went well, we all loved the Herdwick sheep – especially Jo!
Former Assistant Gardener Jo and her new friend.
Next year we’ll be making some small boats crafted from wood on the estate and doing some ‘bird’ walks with @MostlyScarce These two activities link nicely with our Unravelled exhibition that will be running from May 2014 – all will be revealed!
Grand Tour Flowers Children from Harting School and other groups arranged floral displays for our summer flower festival. We loved it and so did you. In 2014 the garden team are running two flower events, one for Mother’s Day and the other in early September.
An Evening in the Garden
A lovely group joined me on a beautiful summer’s evening for a tour around the garden and a superb two course dinner, we’ll be running another ‘Evening’ next year in July.
Get Active in August – This one didn’t work for us, however, our ‘Wicked Wednesdays’ activity event run by our visitor services team was really successful, so we’re extending this to every Wednesday throughout the summer holiday next year.
Sunset Supper We had to cancel this one due to a lack of bookings so undeterred, we’ve adjusted the offer….so next year we bring you ‘Tripods and Tapas‘ – a great chance to snap away at sunset and chat away to fellow photographers and exchange notes and ideas over some tasty tapas afterwards.
We’re also doing four seasonal photography workshops run by Emma Davies so look out for these too, the first one starts on 28/2/14.
Murder Mystery Halloween quiz trail in the Tunnels This was fabulous and everyone loved it, created by Assistant Gardener @NT_JennySwatton we’ll be running this again in addition to an art themed mystery in May for the start of the Unravelled exhibition.
Conservation Talks in the Garden, this is a chance to learn a little more about our work – we’re planning to do these again on every Sunday in November.
Santa’s Grotto Some great feed back received for 2013, Santa saw 500 children! Santa and his grotto will be back next year and we’ve been thinking what to do already!
Wreath Making Workshop remarkably successful and booked out well in advance. We’re doing two next year plus a swag making workshop.
Pick Your Own Day at Uppark Children from Harting School joined us for some woodland chat and marshmallows toasted over a bonfire. We love the links we have with the school, more of the same next year.
Thanks to Jo, Jenny S and Jenny K and the rest of the garden team for their help making our garden inspired events run so smoothly this year.
